What Is an eFoil? A Beginner's Guide to Electric Hydrofoiling
What Is an eFoil?
An eFoil (electric hydrofoil) is a surfboard with an electric motor and hydrofoil wing mounted underneath. Once you reach spee

d, the board lifts out of the water and you glide above the surface — silently, with zero waves required.a bold now

How Does It Work?

A lithium battery powers a near-silent electric motor connected to a propeller beneath the board. As you accelerate, the hydrofoil wing generates lift — the same principle that keeps airplanes in the sky. At around 10 mph, the board rises out of the water and you're flying.
Who Can Ride an eFoil?
Almost anyone. Modern eFoils like the SiFly range feature AI-assisted stabilization that makes learning dramatically easier than traditional foiling. Most beginners are up and riding within 15-30 minutes. You don't need waves, wind, or any prior board sports experience.
What to Look For When Buying
Board size — Larger boards (6'+ feet) offer more stability for beginners. Smaller boards are more agile for experienced riders.
Battery range — Most eFoils offer 60-90 minutes of ride time. Consider how far you want to go and whether swappable batteries matter to you.
Motor power — Higher wattage means faster top speeds and better performance in chop. The SiFly Stellar X delivers up to 35 mph.
Wing selection — Larger wings provide more lift at lower speeds (great for beginners). Smaller wings are faster and more maneuverable.
